The Affiliate Marketer’s Mindset Shift

As an affiliate marketer, measuring your improvements is important, comparing what you learn with what you apply, going through your to-do list daily… But these objective improvements aren’t everything. They prove you’re on the right path but they unfortunately don’t guarantee success. The way you treat the affiliate marketing “game”, how you position yourself has a real impact on the results you’ll get.

If I had to make a list of the top 5 qualities of the successful affiliate marketer, having the right mindset would definitely come first. No wonder why the big boys in business have strong personalities and inspiring success stories. They have “that little something”.

Experiencing a mindset shift as an affiliate marketer isn’t as abstract as you may think. It’s real, it’s tangible. The mindset doesn’t only define the way you think but also the actions you choose to take.

The bad news is: It’s not given by God, it’s not a super power nor magic and it’s not effortless.

The good news is: It’s a decision! And you can take it now. It’s almost like a shortcut because it puts you on a different level, a higher one. It implies bigger/faster results and more responsibilities too as you’ll become a real entrepreneur first in your mind and then “for real”. But, as Spiderman’s uncle said: “With great power comes great responsibility”. Indeed, failures are part of the ride and you’ll always be the only one to blame.

Ok, we can agree that this introduction can be pretty blurry for those of you who don’t have that “success mindset” yet. So I am going to break the mindset shift concept into 3 parts where I will explain what the mindset changes I’m talking about really imply in terms of action. And we know money comes from actions, not wishes.

From acting inside the box to interacting outside of it.

Knowing the steps to take when starting affiliate marketing isn’t the hardest part. There is loads of information out there. Getting a clear picture of how it works and picking a good training program is important. When you start, you’re taught to put each task in different boxes. Sure being organized is important, keeping things simple is essential, but seeing it as a whole can greatly help you. Having a path to follow doesn’t mean you can’t go beyond the path’s limits, twist it a little, bring something more.

When tasks are not connected to each other, they at best only provide the results you’re expecting. This is cool, but they rarely exceed that expectation. I’ll take backlink creation as an example and blog commenting in particular.

If the tasks you have to do aren’t connected to each other in your mind you may end up doing this:

write a trivial blog comment (because you want to create 15 a day and don’t have time to write more than “cool post, thanks for sharing!”)
send a preformated link exchange request to 10 bloggers
send a preformated guest post request to 10 bloggers.

It’s time-consuming and less effective than if you decide to “care” about such interactions. Indeed such tasks are just interactions with people.
When I started blog commenting, I decided to take it seriously and write very few blog comments per day (4 actually) but write good, relevant, different comments.

When we visited Cancun, Mexico this past winter for our annual 5-week R&R trip, we were amazed at how many storefronts and clubs were completely empty. I say "home employment seekers" because in one way or another what you are trying to do is:

I empathize with all of you. I know all to well that finding that perfect work at home opportunity can be like finding a needle in a haystack. You will spend thousands of hours researching. You will encounter countless scams. Finally, when you think you've found the perfect opportunity you learn the position has already been filled. Now what? You're back where you started.

Don"t lose faith. There are REAL work at home jobs out there. Be aware though, a lot of competition is out there for these positions. Most of the people I know who work from home have spent a lot of time researching and searching before they found a position. Its safe to say you could be looking for as long as 6 months to a year before you happen across something.

The point is stay focused and don't take it personal. The trend is growing and so should the opportunities.

The first Idea I had when I started to look for work at home was:
Am I currently working in a position that I could do from my home. I wasn't. However, you may be. If you are, my suggestion is to put together a "game plan". Get all your i's dotted and your t's crossed. Take your idea to the powers that be. Ask them to give it a trial run. Maybe 1 day a week. Who knows? They may like the idea and it could lead to a full time gig.

The most common time wasting techniques used to find work at home:
Would have to be using search engines the wrong way! Being too vague in our search queries. Wasting time sifting through results you don't have to be looking at.

A lot of people don't really understand the power of search engines. There are your more common ones like Google, MSN, and Yahoo. These are the ones that index content from entire web. But, there are also ones that just index the content that is on their site. These types can be found on sites like HotJobs, Monster, and Careerbuilder. No matter where they are they are very powerful tools. When used correctly they can greatly increase your chances of finding legitmate work at home jobs.

By using them correctly I mean:
Don't just type in the phrase "work at home". Be specific. What are you precisely looking for? Use this powerful tool to your advantage.

For example:
When I want to find jobs for part time administrators I type "Part time administrator" "work at home" in the search box. Notice I have put quotes around the phrases I am looking for. The quotes around the phrase tell a search engine I only want results with that exact phrase. This eliminates a lot of stuff I don't need to be looking through.

Previously, I said don't just use the phrase "work at home". There are many other phrases you can use. I have taken some of the more common ones and listed them below.

* telecommuting

* must have home office

* independent contractor

* 1099

* work remotely

* virtual

* virtual office

* remote contractor

* off site

* freelance

Now that you have narrowed down the words you will use to search,

It is time to start looking! Right?

Setting up a successful online business seems to be a popular dream now days. 3) Know when to quit. Some good ideas turn out to be bad ideas in practice. Set some parameters and conditions to each online project you have. It may be you think you have found the number 1 product to be an affiliate for. In fact the early results have been good. So you expand your advertising and promotional activity, but do not see the return you were hoping for. Why not set a rule that you will only promote a new product for a limited amount of time or for a limited amount of advertising spend. If in that period it does not produce a return greater than your investment you will drop the product. How simple is that?

4) Work smart. Invest in all the smart tools and don't cut corners. To be able to do this you may have buy them over a period of time and not immediately, my suggestion is the reinvesting of your early days profits. The benefits you will reap by getting hold of the right tools are invaluable. You should see a sharp increase in both your productivity and profitability.

5) Remain Enthusiastic. Not every project works out and you will definitely have to overcome obstacles and learn from failure. Keep encouraging yourself and stay positive.

6) My final point is this. Successful home workers never stop studying and learning. No matter how well your online business is going, things can change quickly on the internet. Stay informed, always looking at and considering new situations and opportunities as they arise.

Angie Kistaitis' life changed two years ago. "I was gonna be a first-time homeowner and needed something to supplement my income a little bit."

To supplement that income, Angie initially thought about what's been a safety net for many looking for a second job, the retail industry. But it wasn't a perfect fit because any schedule would conflict with her full-time position.

6 Steps To Success In Establishing A Successful Ecommerce Site

1. Find a product or service that the market wants.

It goes without saying that you will need to settle on a product or service that the marketplace wants. This step can take anywhere from days to years sometimes. Any idea you have should be something you are still very excited about several months after you first conceived of it.

If possible, settle on a low-cost product or service that doesn't involve stocking a warehouse full of products, paying high rents or hiring a large staff of employees on day one. For example: Selling software is cheap, once you build the software. Selling clothing is expensive because you have to stock a full range of colors, sizes and styles and have them already purchased and ready to ship.

2. Plan it thoroughly.

Think the whole plan through from beginning to end. Plan your costs to get to market and then budget for 12 months afterward. Develop an accurate spreadsheet that details all your costs and plan conservatively, because it always takes twice as long as you think to get to market. You'll see what I mean about this annoying, but remarkably accurate, law. Have others entered this market and failed? Is anyone doing well in your market? What are your monthly costs and revenues likely to be in 6-12 months if things don't take off like a rocket?

Most businesses start a little slow and build momentum. After you gain momentum have a plan for how to deal with what we call a "success catastrophe"... a truly luxurious problem to have!

3. Research it.

Know your competitors. There is always room for a handful of suppliers in any market but you need to know where you will fit. Do not enter an overly crowded marketplace if you can help it… it's much harder for a new business to get noticed when there is already a lot of "noise" in your space.

Take every assumption you have about your new business and stick them each on a wall. Then go one at a time through each assumption – challenging it and re-considering it critically and thoroughly as though you will be paying the bills for this new investment. (Yes, I know... that is the point I’m making.)

4. Build it.

Depending on the complexity of delivering your product or service, you may need to hire someone that is more expert than you in managing and building your site. If you are selling goods with a Yahoo-style ecommerce store, it is normally not necessary - you can do that yourself with proper planning and research. But if you are building a downloadable music store or planning to stream movies into the homes of your customers you will need some people who really understand the pitfalls and solutions that come with building a complex service like that.

5. Give it a high gloss look.

Your web site design needs to look professional. Without a clean, professional look, your customers won't trust you or your site. Spell check everything. Hire a good web designer with a handful or more of really slick looking sites under their belt.
